I considered a longer post about this today. Scanned it on the Greenline and muttered to myself as I mulled a response during a drizzly slog from Central Square to 890 Commonwealth Avenue.
Skepticism can be a bracing corrective to white-hot “next-big-thing-ism” miasmic, gaseous entities perpetually spew forth. So I guess the Phoenix piece can be taken as a salutary poke at the social media bubble some of us are maybe just a tad too comfortable inhabiting. If this describes you, then you need to read it.
That said, to quote Heath Ledger’s Joker, “There’s no going back.” Intellectual honesty demands we acknowledge this, even if it comes with the painful insight that the evolutionary path leads to eventual oblivion. And while I am convinced public radio will be around ten years hence, I’m less confident it will be in the form we have grown most accustomed to (“Today, on All Things Tweeted”).
But honestly, the discussion over Twitter has grown quite moldy—at least for me. Or perhaps I lack the imaginative capacity to steer the discussion along to fresher ground. Regardless, I am taking a hiatus. But of course I will still Tweet. When it comes to demonstrating its utility, the best course obviously is to let your fingers do the talking.
