Todd Mundt is no garden-variety public radio servant.
A new media evangelist in public broadcasting circles, he is the brains behind “Louisville Public Media.” Notice that is not “radio,” or “broadcasting,” but “media.”
And did I mention he is their local Morning Edition host and blogs as well? You can read it here.
I’m guessing about two hours of sleep nightly, Todd?
His digital street cred is obviously high, so when he posted a draft of his new media strategy, we all sat up and took notice.
I applaud his transparency and below I posted excerpts from the draft. I encourage you to visit his blog and read it in its entirety. The comments it has elicited are worth considering as well. And I am sure he would like to hear from you.
Our primary business has never been technology – the transmission of radio waves, the ownership of towers; it is service to the community.
New technologies open new pathways 1) for us to engage with our audience more directly than ever before, and 2) for our listeners to interact with people who share their concerns and values all over the world.
We need to “listen” to what our audience says about us on twitter, Facebook, in the newspaper, or word-of-mouth in the community, so we can respond appropriately, and most important, so we can learn.
Tools like blogs allow us to explain more thoroughly our processes to those who are interested; the web is a great place to offer access to the source materials our journalists use as they work on their stories, from documents to unedited interviews. We should “open” our news process to our audience, to the extent that this is possible.
So what do you think? Any curveballs here, or has he knocked this one out of the park?
Have a good Memorial Day, everyone.
